Glossary term

CBD: CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the best-known cannabinoids. NHS public information says CBD is a substance found in cannabis and notes that Epidyolex contains highly purified CBD; unlike THC, that product does not contain the chemical that causes a “high”.

Why this term matters

Patients often confuse prescribed CBD-containing medicines with shop-bought CBD wellness products.

UK medical cannabis context

In the UK, some prescribed medicines contain CBD, but many OTC CBD products are sold as food supplements rather than medicines.

What not to assume

CBD can still have side effects and medicine interactions, and NHS notes it can affect liver function monitoring.

Careful wording: Avoid saying CBD is risk-free, non-medical or effective for everything.
