Cannabinoid: A cannabinoid is a chemical compound that interacts directly or indirectly with the body’s cannabinoid-related signalling systems. In patient education, “cannabinoid” usually means compounds such as THC, CBD, CBG or CBN found in or derived from cannabis.

It is the foundation term for reading labels, research and product descriptions.

NICE uses cannabinoid language when discussing licensed, plant-derived and synthetic products.
What not to assume
Patients should not assume all cannabinoids have the same effects, legal status or evidence base.
Careful wording: Avoid implying “cannabinoid” automatically means benefit.
