Glossary term
Patient-reported outcome: A patient-reported outcome is information about symptoms or quality of life reported directly by the patient rather than measured only by a clinician or test.
Why this term matters
Useful for symptom diaries, clinic reviews and interpreting trial endpoints.
UK medical cannabis context
NICE’s Sativex recommendation uses a patient-reported numeric rating scale for spasticity symptoms.
What not to assume
Valuable, but still subjective and context-dependent.
Careful wording: Avoid treating PROs as less real than “hard” data; they are still important.
