Terpenes describe part of the plant’s chemistry
Terpenes are aromatic compounds made by cannabis and many other plants. They help create the smell and flavour of a product. Myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool and pinene are among the names often reported for cannabis flower.
More than one form of a terpene can exist. A name such as phellandrene or pinene may therefore need an isomer, concentration and test method before it identifies a specific measured constituent.
What laboratory research has tested
Most claims about cannabis terpenes begin with cell or animal work. Beta-caryophyllene, for example, bound to CB2 receptors in experiments reported by Gertsch and colleagues. That finding made it biologically interesting, but it did not establish a treatment effect in patients.
Reviews have proposed that cannabinoids and terpenes might interact, often called the entourage effect. The hypothesis is plausible enough to study, but it is not proof that a product with a longer terpene list works better or produces a predictable experience.
Human studies are much less common and are specific to a compound, dose, route and outcome. Results from inhaled lavender, citrus preparations or combination supplements cannot automatically be transferred to the amount of a terpene present in cannabis flower.
Reading a terpene result
A laboratory result may show:
- which terpenes were detected
- their concentration in a sample
- whether the result applies to a particular batch
- the method and detection limit used by the laboratory
It does not show how much reaches the bloodstream after vaporisation, how a different batch compares or what effect an individual patient will experience.
Product labels and batch data
Terpene information can still be useful. It helps distinguish batches and records part of a product’s chemical profile. Read it beside the THC and CBD content, prescribed dose, route and batch number. A cultivar name without current batch data is a weaker description than a measured certificate of analysis.
The clinical evidence gap
The terpene literature is not one body of clinical evidence. It ranges from plant chemistry and receptor experiments to animal studies and a small number of human studies. Each compound page on MCPH lists the study design and direct source so that a cell result is not presented as a patient outcome.
