Why this matters

If you are already prescribed privately in the UK, medical cannabis treatment involves several recurring costs beyond the prescription itself. Knowing what to record each month can help you understand your spending, plan ahead, and avoid surprises when it’s time to reorder.

This guide is not about choosing a clinic, product, or pharmacy. It is about helping you track the categories of cost that may arise during your treatment. Every patient’s situation is different, and your prescriber or clinic should be able to explain their specific fees and processes.

What costs can arise each month?

Private medical cannabis treatment in the UK typically involves several cost categories. Not all will apply to you every month, but it can help to keep a simple record of the following:

  • Consultation fees: Many clinics charge for follow-up appointments, which may be monthly, quarterly, or at another interval set by your clinician. Check whether your clinic includes these in a package or charges separately.
  • Prescription and repeat fees: Some clinics charge an admin fee for issuing each prescription or repeat prescription. This may be separate from the cost of the medicine itself.
  • Pharmacy and dispensing fees: The pharmacy that dispenses your prescription may add a dispensing or handling fee. This is often listed on your invoice.
  • Delivery charges: Medicine is usually posted or couriered to your home. Delivery costs vary by pharmacy and may be free above a certain order value.
  • Product changes: If your clinician changes your product (for example, a different flower strain or oil), there may be additional consultation or admin fees. The new product itself will also have its own cost.
  • Devices and accessories: If you use a vaporiser, you may need to replace parts or buy accessories. These are not always covered by NHS or private prescriptions.

A simple notebook or spreadsheet can help you record these each month. You might note the date, the type of cost, the amount, and any notes about the clinic or pharmacy involved.

Keep the admin side in one place

Cost, products, delivery dates and remaining stock are the moving parts most people end up trying to keep across invoices, texts and notes. Grams Left is the simple way to track them in one place.

Grams Left: know what you have left and track cannabis stock for free

It is a free cannabis tracker for keeping a private record of your products, remaining grams or millilitres, costs, delivery dates and personal notes. That gives you a clearer picture of what you have already been supplied and what you have spent, without turning the tracker into treatment advice.

Grams Left does not tell you what to take, what to choose or when to request a prescription. Keep following your clinician’s instructions and use the app for the practical record-keeping around your treatment.

What to ask your clinic or pharmacy

If you are unsure about any costs, it is reasonable to ask your clinic or pharmacy for clarity. Here are some safe questions you might consider:

  • What are the fees for a follow-up consultation, and how often are they needed?
  • Is there an admin fee for issuing a repeat prescription?
  • What are the pharmacy’s dispensing and delivery charges?
  • Are there any additional fees if my product is changed?
  • How do I request a repeat prescription, and how long does it usually take?

These questions can help you plan your monthly spending. They do not replace clinical advice about your treatment.

What this guide cannot decide for you

This guide cannot tell you which clinic, product, or pharmacy to choose. It cannot promise that your treatment will be affordable or that NHS funding will be available. Medical cannabis remains a private treatment for most UK patients, and costs vary widely.

Always speak to your clinician or prescriber about any concerns you have about the cost of your treatment. If you are struggling with costs, your clinic may be able to discuss options or signpost you to support.
