Glossary term
Controlled drug: A controlled drug is a medicine or substance regulated under drug-control law because of misuse and safety concerns. Some cannabis-based medicines fall into this area.
Why this term matters
Patients need this to understand travel rules, storage, packaging and driving discussions.
UK medical cannabis context
GOV.UK travel guidance and NICE discussions both assume patients may need proof and careful handling of controlled medicines.
What not to assume
“Controlled” does not mean “illegal”; it means stricter legal handling rules apply.
Careful wording: Avoid saying controlled drug means criminality when the medicine is lawfully prescribed.
