What Is a Medical Cannabis Prescription?

In November 2018, the UK became one of the first countries to legalise cannabis-based medicinal products (CBPMs) by prescription. Since then, thousands of UK patients have obtained legal prescriptions for conditions ranging from chronic pain to epilepsy.

However, the process remains confusing for many. This step-by-step guide walks you through exactly how to get a medical cannabis prescription in the UK in 2026, updated with the latest regulatory changes.

Step 1: Check If You Qualify

To qualify for a medical cannabis prescription, you must meet three criteria:

  • A diagnosed condition — chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, epilepsy, MS, IBS, or another qualifying condition
  • Two failed conventional treatments — you must have tried at least two standard treatments without adequate relief
  • A specialist referral — only GMC-registered specialists can prescribe medical cannabis

NHS route: Currently, the NHS only prescribes for three conditions: severe treatment-resistant epilepsy (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome), chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and MS spasticity. Access is extremely limited.

Private route: This is how most UK patients access medical cannabis. Private clinics have a much broader range of qualifying conditions including chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, and many others.

Step 2: Choose a Clinic

There are several established private clinics in the UK. Here is a comparison of the main options:

  • Curaleaf Clinic — Initial consultation: from free (Access Scheme). Follow-up: free to £30.
  • Mamedica — Initial: £49-£150. Access Scheme: £200 one-time for lifetime consultations.
  • Integro Medical Clinics — Initial: £95. Follow-up: £40-£49 every 3 months.
  • Cantourage — Initial: £99. Follow-up: £29-£74 every 3 months.
  • Zerenia — Initial: £99. Follow-up: £49.

Choose based on your condition, budget, and how quickly you need an appointment. Most clinics offer initial consultations within 1-2 weeks.

Step 3: Book and Attend Your Consultation

Book online through the clinic’s website. Before your appointment, you will need to:

  • Register with the clinic and provide identification
  • Request your medical records from your GP (the clinic may also request these)
  • Complete a patient intake form describing your condition and treatment history

The consultation is typically 20-30 minutes via video call with a GMC-registered specialist. The doctor will assess your eligibility, discuss your condition, and if appropriate, issue a prescription.

Step 4: Receive and Collect Your Prescription

If prescribed, your medication will be dispatched from a specialist pharmacy. Most clinics use postal delivery. Typical costs:

  • Flower: £5-£15 per gram (most patients use 0.5-1g per day)
  • Oil: £50-£150 per bottle (typically lasts 1 month)

Prescriptions are valid for 28 days. Repeat prescriptions can be arranged through your clinic, usually at no additional cost or a small fee.

Step 5: Ongoing Care

You will have regular follow-up appointments (typically every 3 months) to review your treatment. If the first medication does not work, your specialist can adjust the dose or switch products.

Important: Driving and Medical Cannabis

It is legal to drive with a valid medical cannabis prescription, provided you are not impaired. A significant development in January 2026 introduced new national police guidance instructing officers to treat patients as “patients first, suspects second.”

The legal THC blood limit is 2 micrograms per litre. Patients taking THC-containing medication will likely exceed this, but the law provides a medical defence if you can show a valid prescription. Always carry your prescription proof.

FAQs

How long does the process take?

From initial booking to receiving medication: typically 2-4 weeks. Some clinics offer faster turnaround.

Can my GP prescribe medical cannabis?

No. Only specialists on the GMC Specialist Register can prescribe CBPMs. Your GP can refer you, but cannot prescribe directly.

Will my employer know?

There is no automatic notification to your employer. You may choose to disclose if reasonable adjustments are needed at work.
